Grade incoming automotive packs before deployment into stationary storage applications

Who this is for: Quality control professionals working to repurpose used automotive battery packs into stationary storage.

PROBLEM: Every pack must be screened for defects, but quality control is time-consuming and expensive.

SOLUTION: AccelaGrade Module

About automotive pack re-deployment

Many companies, including Pulsenics customer Moment Energy, are working to re-deploy used batteries from older electric vehicles as stationary storage solutions. This growing industry promises to serve microgrids, utilities, datacenters and commercial customers with affordable and sustainable energy storage.

Because EV batteries are in varying conditions when they are removed from vehicles, incoming packs must be screened for quality to estimate useful life and ensure safety. Incoming quality control is chiefly performed by cyclers, requiring full charge and discharge to test capacity. This legacy form of quality control can take several hours per module and is the most severe process bottleneck by a wide margin.

Today, repurposing operations struggle to make money because legacy testing methods are slow and expensive. AccelaGrade, by Pulsenics, has changed the game.

“The ability to rapidly and accurately qualify used batteries is critical in scaling the second-life industry. Our partnership with Pulsenics allows us to vastly increase our manufacturing capacity by several GWh. This growth is supported by our world-class battery testing methodology, which remains the safest in the industry as the only one to hold full UL certifications for years.” Edward Chiang, Co-Founder and CEO of Moment Energy.

The AccelaGrade Difference

Test for capacity and internal resistance simultaneously

AccelaGrade combines the two most time-consuming pieces of the incoming pack QC process and combines them into one. Today, used packs need to pass both full-cycle capacity testing and and internal resistance checks which can take up to days. Pulsenics uses a multi-frequency EIS excitation to test for the same outcomes in less than 30 minutes.

PERFORMANCE

17x faster compared to traditional cyclers

AccelaGrade can grade a batch of modules in less than 30 minutes. AccelaGrade™ is a fully integrated battery testing and grading solution that cycles and grades batteries using capacity and impedance measurements. It features robust temperature sensing and a patented cell balancing mechanism to ensure accurate, repeatable results.

AccelaGrade rapidly integrates data from:

  • Partial cycling
  • Temperature measurements
  • Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)

PRICE

Because AccelaGrade completes a grade much faster than a cycler, saving on labor hours, it uses fewer channels (and at less power per channel). A lower channel count leads to savings on power infrastructure, a smaller physical footprint, reduced maintenance costs and a lower power draw.

Compared to cyclers, AccelaGrade:

  • Delivers lower cost of quality.
  • Uses a fraction of the electricity per cell.

Cyclers can’t match AccelaGrade’s throughput enablement
